Non-Alcoholic Sleep Mocktail with Kiwi & Chamomile
Tangy, lightly sweet, and genuinely calming — The Sleepy Kiwi is a mojito-inspired mocktail built for your wind-down routine. Fresh muddled kiwi meets cool chamomile tea for a drink that’s as functional as it is refreshing.
Yield: 1 serving
Prep: 10 min
Best for: Evening wind-down, sleep support
Ingredients
- 1 kiwi fruit, peeled & diced (save 1 full slice for garnish)
- 1 oz lime juice
- ½ tsp agave or honey
- 1 cup chamomile medley tea, steeped and cooled
Preparation
- Brew. Steep chamomile tea in 1 cup of water for 7 minutes. Allow to cool completely before using.
- Muddle. In a glass, muddle the diced kiwi with lime juice and agave or honey until the fruit is broken down and juicy.
- Build. Fill the glass with ice and pour the cooled chamomile tea over.
- Finish. Stir gently. Garnish with a kiwi slice or lime wheel.
How to Serve
- Serve with a spoon: the muddled kiwi at the bottom is the best part.
- Sparkling: You many also top with a splash of sparkling water for a little fizz.
- Lemon Balm variation: Substitute or combine chamomile with a lemon balm tea — equally relaxing and a slightly brighter flavor.
Why These Ingredients Work
Kiwi is rich in serotonin and melatonin — two compounds involved in regulating sleep. Research suggests that eating kiwi regularly before bed may improve sleep efficiency and reduce the time spent awake after initially falling asleep.
Chamomile contains apigenin, a compound that binds to GABA receptors in the brain, helping reduce anxiety and promote calmness. One of the most well-studied calming herbs in the world, it’s traditionally used to ease the mind before sleep.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the chamomile tea ahead of time?
Yes — steep a full pot and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Having it ready makes this a 2-minute drink on weeknights.
Why is kiwi good for sleep?
Kiwi is naturally high in serotonin and melatonin, which are involved in your body’s sleep-wake cycle. One study found that eating two kiwis before bed for four weeks improved sleep efficiency by up to 5.4% and reduced time awake after falling asleep by nearly 29%. Two kiwis a night is a lot, though — which is why we love pairing one with a sleep-friendly chamomile blend to complement those benefits without going overboard.
Can I add alcohol?
You can — a splash of vodka or rum would work here. That said, alcohol is well-known to disrupt sleep quality even in small amounts, which is exactly why we keep this alcohol-free. If the goal is a better night’s sleep, skip it.
Important Considerations
- Ragweed allergy? Chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae plant family and may trigger a reaction in people with ragweed or related allergies.
- Pregnant or nursing? Avoid chamomile without guidance from your healthcare provider.
